Planning for a friend and in this case, a fellow even planner, can come with a lot of pressure. When Whitney asked for our help, I nervous but 100% in. Whitney and I (Kelly) have known each other for several years and Whit was actually the Mistress of Ceremonies at my wedding. When she met Sean and later got engaged to him, my husband and I were over the moon. It was pure coincidence that Sean lives just 5 houses down from us and we had spent many a evenings with these two over glasses of wine and random nights.
When Whit began planning, I strongly encouraged her to do a New Years Eve wedding. I mean come on, everyone wants something to do on NYE and it always becomes a mess the day of and nothing ever pans out the way that you think it will. Eventually Whit settled on the McKay Ballroom to host their New Year's wedding (score!) with the ceremony at Frederik Meijer Gardens. The design revolved around rich golds and greens and transcending shades of red. No one is more fabulous then Whitney and I knew we had to really push the design.
The day went off without a hitch and as the guest/planner, it was a blast! Anyone considering a wedding on this festivious of all days, GO FOR IT! It provides the perfect party atmosphere and everyone it ready to stay to the bitter end to ring in the new year. Cheers to two people who mean so much to us. Pop. Fizz. Clink.

I have known Allison since college, we are in the same sorority. She is kind, level-headed and a ton of fun! When Allison asked me to help with her wedding, you know I was in. The venue they chose (Pakard Proving Grounds) is beautiful and is more of a blank space than other venues. You are in charge of bringing in everything from tables and chairs to bars etc, which can be overwhelming for a bride. Allison and Chris wanted a natural, relaxed style that was fuss-free and fit within their tighter budget.
I pitched a design that created a family style feel with long tables, warm linens, paper goods and tons of greens. We were creative with how we used the budget and incorporated eucalyptus throughout the entire design. I worked with a local florist, Damsel Floral, who helped me get the product and she coached me through making over 40 bud vases for table decor while she took on the bouquets and boutonnières.
Using greens for the bridesmaid bouquets and boutonnières helped save in cost and still offered a full look.
I used various greenery to create the hanging arbor in the ceremony space and the two pieces over the head table. For the guest tables, we laid down the eucalyptus instead of having the full wrapped greenery runner you see on Pinterest weddings. This was a HUGE savings and created a similar effect.
The couple have a love of cats and particularly their cat Tink. It just so happeneds the couples initials together spell out CAT (Chris + Allison Thomas) so this was just something we HAD to incorporate. You will see it in their custom cake topper and the outline of the cat on all paper goods. Every wedding should have a theme that screams the couples style. Between the cats and the natural design, I feel like we nailed it!
